He grew up in South Side before moving to Greenville, SC at the age of 16 years old where he attended East Cooper High School with his brother Nathaniel Bridges who also became a musician later on in life (he played drums for Twenty One Pilots). Bridges began performing music at an early age by playing drums in his father’s band when he was 10 years old. The family moved to Nashville when he was 11 years old where he formed a cover band called The Bridge Band before taking up guitar lessons from his uncle Mike Smith (of Bluegrass band Uncle Charlie & His Musical Mountaineers). He dropped out of high school at 17 due to financial difficulties but eventually returned when his father went into business with another man named Steve Perryman who owned Music City Records which had connections with Atlantic Records’ president Ahmet Ertegun; this led them all back home again where they started working together again doing shows around town until finally getting signed onto Atlantic Records along side Chris Stapleton & Jason Aldean among others!

When he was 13 years old, his dad bought him his first acoustic guitar. Garrett played it for a few days and then put it back in the closet where he had stored it for 20 years. It wasn’t until he was 25 that he rediscovered the guitar again and started playing it regularly.

When they broke up in 2000, he went on to form The Allman Brothers Band with Gregg Allman (vocals), Dickey Betts (guitar), Warren Haynes (keyboards) and Jaimoe Johanson (drums).
