The family moved to Nashville when he was 11 years old where he formed a cover band called The Bridge Band before taking up guitar lessons from his uncle Mike Smith (of Bluegrass band Uncle Charlie & His Musical Mountaineers). He dropped out of high school at 17 due to financial difficulties but eventually returned when his father went into business with another man named Steve Perryman who owned Music City Records which had connections with Atlantic Records’ president Ahmet Ertegun; this led them all back home again where they started working together again doing shows around town until finally getting signed onto Atlantic Records along side Chris Stapleton & Jason Aldean among others!
